What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?

A neuropsychological assessment is the process of understanding an individual’s neurocognitive abilities. This type of assessment evaluates a wide range of abilities including language, motor, visual spatial, memory, problem solving, and psychological functioning. In general neuropsychological testing is focused on how you perform and allows us to understand your strengths and areas of vulnerability. The information learned is interpreted by the neuropsychologist and summarized in a report with specific recommendations based upon your results.

How do I know if my insurance will cover the service?

Upon request, we will verify coverage for clients prior to the evaluation. We do our best to provide an estimate of cost if an individual has not met their deductible or out of pocket maximum. We will also complete any prior authorization that is required by your insurance company.

  • Aetna (preferred provider)
  • EBMS
  • Meritain
  • TriWest (VA)
  • Tricare West
  • Medicaid/Denali Kid Care- we are not accepting NEW referrals
  • Medicare

We provide a super bill for the following insurances:

  • Cigna
  • United

How do I schedule an evaluation?

To schedule an evaluation, we require a referral from a medical provider that provides information regarding why the service is necessary. Examples of when it is appropriate to be referred for an evaluation include for treatment planning, diagnostic clarification, or to clarify if the problem is psychogenic or neurogenic. This should be discussed with your provider. How long is the wait for an evaluation?

Our wait list varies and often depends on the provider you will be seeing. It is common for individuals to wait 4-6 months for an evaluation.

What to expect on the day of the evaluation

The evaluation starts at 9:00 AM, with a lunch break from 12-1 pm. The evaluation is usually done between 2-4 pm. Our offices are in a professional building and every effort is made to make sure you are comfortable throughout the testing process. Breaks are offered frequently and we encourage people to come in comfortable clothing and bring snacks. It will also be very important to get a good night’s rest prior to your evaluation as testing can be quite tiring. Several weeks after the evaluation, you will meet with your provider and review the results.

What does the process look like?

Once referral is received from your medical provider, it will be reviewed and you will be contacted to schedule. There are typically three separate appointments made. The first will be an intake appointment to gather information about the concerns present along with a history; currently this is done using secure telehealth. The second appointment will be an in-person testing appointment at our office. The third appointment will be to discuss the results of your evaluation, which is also typically done through telehealth.

How long does an evaluation take?

Our evaluations typically include 1-2 hours of clinical interview, 4-6 hours of in-person testing, 3-5 hours of report writing, and 1 hour of individualized feedback.
